Earthquake Relief Efforts

Since January 14th, more than $65,000 in earthquake relief donations from around the country have been transferred to the St Boniface Haiti Foundation (SBHF), our partners on the ground in Haiti.

Foundation staff are currently working with the USNS Comfort (a Navy hospital ship anchored off-shore), UNICEF, Ministries of Health, the World Health Organization and Catholic Relief Services.  They are:

Accepting into Fond des Blanc, homeless families and injured who have been forced to leave Port au Prince.

Taking in patients directly from the USNS Comfort.

Setting up 80 mobile clinics in the Fond des Blanc catchment area to provide health care, nutritional assessments, potable water and vaccines.

Preparing health care access and follow-up for 500 children in targeted populations of greatest need.

Preparing to provide an additional 8,000 children with Ministry of Health’s recommended vaccines and vitamins.

Providing prenatal services to 2,000 pregnant women to help prevent neonatal mortality.

Providing supplemental micronutrients for 8000 children 6-59 months of age and 2000 pregnant or lactating women.

Please continue to keep all the people of Haiti, first responders, and the staff at St Boniface Hospital, Fond des Blanc, in your prayers.

Further Update on SBHF activities

Updated February 8, 2010:

Last Monday evening, members of IC-Haiti met with Nannette Canniff, founder and CEO of St Boniface Haiti Foundation (SBHF), and Paul Fanning, SBHF director of development, for an update on the foundation’s work assisting the victims of the Haiti earthquake.  Nannette and her husband just returned from Haiti having been working there before, during, and after the erthquake.  Joining the group were Frs Richard and Robert Butler, Catholic priests and fellow travelers to Haiti who were also in Fond des Blanc during the earthquake.

SBHF and its “bloggers” report that Conor Shapiro, SBHF director general in Haiti, continues to shuttle between Fond des Blanc and Port au Prince working with other aid organizations to procure much needed medicine and supplies, while coordinating the transport of critically injured patients to the hospital in Fond des Blanc.

In addition to caring for the injured and displaced homeless at the SBHF hospital in Fond des Blanc, foundation medical and clinical nutrition staff have been hard at work in Port au Prince.  We first met Dr. Iliane Milane last fall as we traveled with her to a child wellness and immunization clinic in the village of Mexi.  She’s been dividing her time between her rural clinics and the Port au Prince refugee camps, providing care for the children several of whom have had to be transported to the St Boniface hospital for more acute care.  Ellen Boldon, the clinical dietician implementing the SBHF infant nutrition program, has been taking her expertise to the many children in Mother Teresa’s home, the Missionaries of Charity Home for Children in Port au Prince.
